My August ’17 One Monthly Goal was to quilt and bind four placemats for the daughter of a longtime friend and her new husband as a wedding gift. I’m pleased with how they turned out. See my August ’17 One Monthly Goal post for more information on the pattern by Elizabeth Hartman and my color choices.
Each of these placemats shrank a full inch in both length and width after I washed and air-dried them, so they are now 12″ by 17″ which still accommodates a large plate. I did not pre-shrink the fabric but may do so the next time I make placemats.
Do you generally pre-shrink your fabric for quilting projects?

The placemats turned out great. I’m sure they will love them. I generally pre-wash all of my fabrics. They usually don’t go on the shelf without washing. If I buy a kit and there are small pieces I don’t usually pre-wash. Does that make sense?? Congratulations on the finish!

Linda, I’m horribly late in responding to your comment about my wedding gift placemats. I appreciate you sharing your experience with pre-washing, but I get that you don’t wash the small pieces in a kit. Take care, Mary.

For me, even if I pre-wash my fabric, I still get about that much shrinkage on placemats due to the batting crinkling.

A beautiful wedding gift! I don’t typically pre-wash fabric (except reds and bright colors). I don’t pre-wash the batting.

Lovely quilting on the placemats. I have never pre-washed fabric. It’s possible you experienced some shrinkage with the quilting.
