I just posted yesterday about this Christmas Baubles Mini Quilt in my Oct 2018 OMG Finishes post, but then two things happened. I woke up to a couple inches of snow this morning and thought this mini quilt was just made for snow quilt photography, and I had a question that I forgot to ask my blog readers. I want to know what marking tool you use to mark lines for quilting on fabric that is predominately white. I think some of you might respond that you use a Hera marker (which I have but could not find Sunday when I quilted this mini), and because I generally use 100% cotton low loft batting, I have found that the lines that I make with the Hera marker tend to quickly disappear. I ended up using masking tape to mark my lines which worked okay but definitely is not the best marking solution.
So if you use the Hera marker, what kind of batting do you use? And if you use something besides the Hera marker for white or whitish fabric, what marking tool works best for you?

Hi Mary! For straight line quilting I just use my walking foot. Either the edge of the foot itself, or if that is too narrow then the little stick/arm attachment. I measure from the needle to whatever width I want. I have rulers too, but those are too much. If I have my FMQ foot on, I have used the edge of that foot as well for really narrow straight stitches. One last thing I use is a laser light for HSTs. I attach a laser light to my machine, matching up the light to the needle and then stitch on the red line. Whatever method you used, it looks great! Tape would work nicely except that I occasionally sew the tape! Oops! Plus it’s a pain to remove and reset. I don’t have a Hera marker but it sure sounds handy.

I have the same problem you do in that my lines disappear with a Hera marker, and the disappearing marker pens I’ve used in the past are very hard to make “disappear”. I’ve tried using straight pins to mark where I need to go, but that has proved tedious. So I mostly try to keep it straight with my walking foot and eyeballing. I will be interested to see others’ responses. And I love your mini quilt.

I do use a Hera Marker and I love Quilter’s Dream battings (I tend to use Dream Green). I mark a few lines at a time. On darker fabric I will use the Clover white marker that disappears with heat.
And that snow! Wow! The mini is lovely on it; has it already melted away?
