2019 Qtr 1 Finish-A-Long Goals

I have four projects that I hope to complete in the first quarter of 2019.

The first one is a gender-neutral Mercyful Quilt made from Carolyn Friedlander fabrics that will be donated to a hospice patient at Mercy Hospital in Sacramento, CA, and will eventually be given to that patient’s family. I have made 15 of the 25 blocks needed for this quilt top and am still deciding if I going use Kona Medium Grey sashing or not. Sashing will give the eye a place to rest, but part of me likes the lively energy that is created when the blocks are right next to each other. All opinions are welcome! Below is a pic of six of the blocks:

The oldest UFO on this list is my Random Intention quilt top. My friend, Roseanne, at Home Sewn By Us has graciously agreed to machine quilt it for me. I’m still thinking I might want to try scrappy binding with this quilt.

The third quilt I hope to get finished is my Rainbow Autumn Chain quilt top that I will be sending out for quilting in the next month or so.

The final project is the most “iffy” of the four.  A few months ago I purchased a Memorium quilt kit from Hawthorne Supply Co with the intention of making the Memorium quilt to commemorate my friend, Kristen, getting her master’s  in social work this May. I’m sure I will have it completed by graduation day but maybe not this quarter. Below is a pic of the front of the pattern with the beautiful fabrics in the kit. I especially love the fabric on the far right that I will use for binding.

Hi Mary! I am going to join in on this quarterly finish party as soon as I can give it a thought. You know I just LOVE your second UFO, and you can go to the bank that it will be finished this quarter. Wow – tons of time for me. My plan is to have it back to you by the end of the month! I also just adore your third project. All those pretty colors and then stars, too! This one is a big winner for me, and except for the centers it reminds me of my Evening Star quilt. I did a lot of ruler work on that quilt, I think. It got put away for Christmas but it’s time to pull it back out again. I’m looking forward to seeing these move along. Happy Friday to you. ~smile~ Roseanne

  3. I think the blocks do look great next to each other but the choice for me really often comes down to quilt size: will it be big enough without the sashing? I really think your Rainbow Autumn Chain quilt is lovely and I look forward to seeing how all these projects come together and finish for you. 🙂

  4. I don’t think that first one needs sashing – it looks wonderful without it – but like Quilting Jetgirl says, if it needs to be bigger, that’s the easiest way to get more in!

Anyway, these look like some really lovely projects!

Hi! I found your blog because of the 2019FAL . I saw that first quilt and I wanted to know more. I guess I’m a sucker for Carolyn Friedlander and that pattern is a perfect match. It’s awesome that you are making it for hospital charity. I live in the Sierra Foothills, so it made me happy to see a (somewhat) local area mentioned. Good luck with all your projects!

I absolutely love your fabric choices for Random Intention. I think a scrappy border would look wonderful! Good luck meeting your goals this quarter!

I vote that if you have enough fabric (and time to make blocks) to not use sashing on the first quilt. You have some lovely projects here. Good luck! On behalf of the FAL crew, thanks for joining in!
