September 2022 OMG Finish

My September 2022 One Monthly Goal was to make a set of eight herringbone/chevron place mats as a house-warming gift for my niece, Mary Frances, who bought a lovely vintage home a few months ago. For the pattern I used two of the foundation paper pieced templates from Alison Glass’ Feathers 2021 Pattern Book.

I used four fabrics from the Chasing Wildflowers Collection by Juniper Row Design for Hawthorne Supply Co. and a recent Giucy Giuce print called Matrix in Mulberry from his From Attic Collection (with the pink pliers on top of it). All the other fabrics were from my stash, though I did need to buy some more Smoke and Rust fabric by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics for binding from Kimmie Anne Fabrics on Etsy. I especially love the Aboriginal print placed in the upper left side of the bin. It looks like a snake in the pic above in the first vertical place mat on left side.

For the back of the place mats, I used two lovely fabrics from Sharon Holland’s Willow Collection: Owl Things Floral in Forest and Flora and Fauna in Treasured.

I quilted the place mats with diagonal lines spaced 3/4″ apart which can replicate the chevron design depending on how my niece places them on her table. The thread is Aurafil 50 wt Medium Orange (5009).

  1. The placemats look great! I love the colors, and the backing is pretty enough that they could be reversed! Nice quilting, too!

  4. The placemats came together so well, and the diagonal quilting finished them perfectly. I love the idea of creating more chevrons by alternating how the placemats are set on the table.

Hi Mary! Beautiful job. Those fabrics!!! Everything came together just perfectly and you choice for the quilting pattern is the icing on the cake. She may even want to flip them over now and then. I am 100% certain that Mary Frances will love everything about them. Congrats on finishing your September goal. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
