I am joining the weekly To-Do Tuesday Linky Party hosted by my friend, Roseanne, at Home Sewn By Us. I find goal-setting to be extremely helpful to get more accomplished, and since I’m always trying to get one more project done, I’m all for a little extra push and/or encouragement.
To-Do for the week of October 8th-October 14th:
- Attend Blue Onion class at Santa Fe Quilting. – √ Done
- Finish paper piecing the segments for all the Lumen blocks. √ Done
To-Do #1
I learned so much by taking the Blue Onion class from Fran Holden. I honestly can’t imagine learning how to use the Creative Grids All Ovals ruler simply by reading the instructions. There’s all sorts of flipping and trimming, but the pieces fit together like magic! The first pic below is the one block I finished using a gender-neutral palette of teal, mustard, and grey. I have pieces cut to make five more blocks, and I’m going to try to make another block soon to solidify learning how to sew these curves. The second photo is a scrappy Blue Onion quilt made by Fran that she calls Bo’s Orbs. I love this quilt and of course want to make one using this color scheme!
To-Do #2
I did get all the segments paper-pieced for the 16 Lumen blocks, and I’ve started to sew the four quadrants into blocks. I have to tell you that matching points is my least favorite part of paper piecing, but I’ve been following Cristy Fincher’s Nesting and Spinning Seams tutorial as recommended by Alison Glass in the Lumen pattern, and so far only one block has given me a hard time. See the four completed blocks (still labeled) below. These will make up the first row.
To-Do for the week of October 15th through October 21st
- Make two blocks for the Sept-Oct Covered in Love Block drive. Thanks, Roseanne, for sharing about this project. Below are the squares I have cut for these blocks. You may notice that my red and yellow squares are larger than they need to be. I almost always like to oversize my HSTs and then trim to size.
- Finish sewing the quadrants together for Lumen blocks 5-16.

Your class must have been good – those are really neat blocks! Lumen is looking good, too! I didn’t put Covered in Love blocks on my list for this week, but I really should – I usually make some. Have a great week!

Oh my, I do love that Bo’s Orbs quilt, as well as your block! Now I want that ruler (I put it on my Christmas list, wonder if I can wait that long . . .)

Hi Mary! A class at the Blue Onion – we have a restaurant with that name. HAHA! Oh, I just LOVE Bo’s Orbs. That is definitely your color scheme, all over the place. All the different fabrics just look SO cool. I would want to use that same fabric, but of course it will look equally cool in another one. I can’t wait to see what you come up with – will there be solids??!! Lumen just LOOKS hard to me. Those skinny points . . . I was just admiring my birthday cake flames and how nicely it is paper pieced. My boss loved it as well – it’s here with me at work where I spend the most time, plus it is my birthday month. Thanks for linking up, Mary! ~smile~ Roseanne

Thanks Roseanne. I’m going to sew the other five Blue Onion blocks that I’ve cut out in grey, mustard and teal and then I’ll see if I want to continue that color palette or not. I appreciate your kind words about your paper pieced birthday cake. I have some small quilted items in my office too. I love the color they add to my otherwise drab office! Take care. Mary

What fun! I love your color palate for your Blue Onion quilt. With Fall here, I’ve been wearing mustard and teal! A friend gifted me the Blue Onion pattern, and I just looked and I do own the ruler too. I’ll get around to making that quilt one day. Your Lumen blocks are looking great!
