December 2020 OMG Finish

My December 2020 One Monthly Goal was to make the quilt top for the quilt I plan to give to my friend, Kristen’s baby girl who is due to make her appearance this spring. Kristen has requested a quilt with cats and birds featuring purple and teal colors. I have added in blue as a transition between purple and teal. The center of the quilt is the Geometric Cat, pattern by Kristy at Quiet Play. I used most of the colors from my Dimension in Dusk Quilt designed by Nydia Kehnle, though I substituted the baby-friendlier, Kona Caribbean, for the more subdued Kona Teal Blue.

The hummingbirds are from a panel that I like so much that I have at least one more in my stash besides the one I used in May for a different  Hummingbirds quilt. The five-inch inner borders each have a small sparrow flitting around in different directions and annoying the Geometric cat to be sure! From Mitzie@Jittery Wings , I downloaded the free Sparrow Quilt pattern and paper-pieced the smallest sparrows using purple, blue, and teal Kona solids. I cut the sparrows into 3.5” squares rather than the shape on the template. I rotated the squares to a diamond shape so the sparrows were angled at 45 degrees, and I then sewed setting corner triangles onto the diamonds to make them into 5 inch squares.

There is one more cat on the back of the quilt, but I will wait to share that cat until I get my quilt finished. I sent off the quilt top that measures 57” X 57” and backing this morning to Melissa at Sew Shabby Quilting, so progress is definitely being made!

Hi Mary! The Geometric Cat in the center is just fabulous but I really love the sparrows flitting about. They add a bit of whimsy and playfulness to the overall piece. You got this finished with plenty of time to spare, which is so nice. No stress for you on the upcoming baby present! What a fabulous way to end 2020, with thoughts of a precious baby enjoying all the pretty colors and being covered with your love. {{Hugs}} Fabulous job. ~smile~ Roseanne

  2. The quilt really turned out nicely! Like those little added sparrows; creates some fun movement in the quilt. The center pieced cat is so fun! Nice finish!

This is so beautiful, in the colors and subjects and execution. Though I must admit, I prefer to think of the sparrows as enrichment for the geometric cat rather than annoyances, lol.
