To-Do for the week of Jan 17th-23rd:

  1. Continue working on Ripples camping quilt for my niece, Kim.√Done
  2. Start binding my temperature quilts. √Done
  3. Cut a few center on-point squares for my Mosaic camping quilt. √Done

To-Do #1

I got six more Ripples blocks done for Kim’s camping quilt. I’m enjoying how this project is starting to take form.

To-Do #2

I got the temperature quilts back from Rebecca on Friday and had them all trimmed by early Saturday morning. I find quilts with Minky backing a little more challenging to trim but thankfully I had borders sewn on the front, so I wasn’t worried about trying to protect the points of any of the flying geese while painstakingly trimming. I’m not going to share any pics of the quilted temp quilts this week–SORRY–but I have decided that when I finish these quilts (and it should be this week), I will write a detailed post about the process involved in making three temperature quilts at the same time. And I also promise to share plenty of photos and links to previous posts about these temp quilts. Over the weekend I machine sewed the binding on all three quilts. I also machine stitched the Kona Charcoal binding on the front of my New Mexico quilt but decided that the less-than-perfect stitching shows up too well on this fabric, so I pivoted for California and Washington, and I’m hand-stitching the binding down on these two quilts which definitely is a more time-consuming task. But one that will be worth it as the end result will more nicely frame Rebecca’s exceptional quilting. Get ready to be WOWED!

To-Do #3

I have started to fussy cut some 3″ on-point center squares for my camping quilt. I am using Amy Friend’s Mosaic Story block pattern.

  1. Make the first border for SAHRR2023.
  2. Finish binding my temperature quilts and write a post about them.

Weekly Progress Update #179

To-Do #1

SAHRR 2023 has officially started! I’m choosing to make a wall hanging using Alison Glass fabrics and coordinating Kona solids. My center block is VERY small measuring 4.5″ square. Read more about this block here.

To-Do #2

I made a lot of progress this past week on the Ripples Camping quilt for my niece, Kim. I made 600 half-square triangles. I actually made 624 HSTs since I decided to replace one of the fabrics that looked too bright with my more-muted-than-usual color palette. Too bad I didn’t remember Sue Pfau’s training on color design through Passport to Quilting that I took last year. She shared about not mixing brightly saturated fabrics with fabrics that have grey tones in them. See her post here that gives more information about this concept. Below is a pic of my design board where I’ve started designing the blocks. I had to break out three more boxes of pins to get the 625 pieces pinned to my design board (and that does not include the eight 2.5″ background squares for each block)! At the top of the design board is one of the blocks sewn together.

To-Do #3

I did start working on my Daisy Sashiko pouch but ran into a snag and put it in time out for a little while. I do think I’ve figured out a solution to the problem. More on that soon.

To-Do for the week of Jan 17-23rd:

  2. Great new! Rebecca has finished quilting my temperature quilts! And they’re supposed to arrive back to me on Friday. If they do get here this weekend, I plan to start binding them.

SAHRR2023 Center Block

I’ve been looking forward to participating in  SAHRR2023 since I finished up SAHRR2022 last year because it was so much fun customizing my design and stretching my piecing skills. See my Blue Dog quilt here and a similar one I made for my stepson, Drew, here.

For this year, I have decided to make a wall hanging using Alison glass fabrics and coordinating Kona solids. I decided to make my SAHRR2023 a color gradient project (Big Surprise I know!), so I started with one of my red-orange Alison Glass prints along with Kona Coral and Poppy. I used the center of Kitty Wilkins’s Fierce block which she designed for the 2019 Summer Sampler to help participants strengthen their tiny paper piecing skills. Weekly Progress Update #178

To-Do #1

I did finish preparing the bindings for the three temperature quilts and decided to photograph one rolled into a wonky spiral next to one of my favorite Christmas gifts given to me by my friend, Kristen. I was really touched that she remembered the year I started quilting. The Open 24 Hours line on the sign is almost true as I tend to wake up early and get a lot of my sewing done in the wee hours of the morning.

To-Do #2

I fussy cut fifty 4.5″ squares for the Ripples Camping quilt that I am making for my niece, Kim. My favorite trick for fussy cutting was taught to me by Elizabeth Hartman when I attended Glamp Stitchalot 2016. There were several big name quilt industry instructors at the sewing retreat including Carolyn Friedlander and Violet Craft. Read about my experience where I felt totally in over my head here. The trick I learned from Elizabeth is to use freezer paper which is cut to the finished size of the square (in this case 4″) and is exactly placed where the fussy cut will be made, pressed with a hot dry iron, and cut out with the 1/4″ seam allowance added on all four sides.

To-Do #1

I’m so happy to report that I did finish my three temperature quilt tops on January 1st! I’m going to wait to share pics until these quilts are completely finished. Below are the last three 2.5″ x 4.5″ flying geese units I made for 2022 with my town in New Mexico on the top (High 63 Kona Glacier/Low 30 Kona Noble Purple), my stepdaughter’s California Bay Area city in the middle (High 59 Kona Cyan/Low Kona Mediterranean), and my stepson’s city in the state of Washington at the bottom (High 49 Kona Celestial/Low Kona Ocean). The quilt tops are being sent off for quilting to Rebecca at Rebecca Grace Quilting today!

January 2023 OMG

My January 2023 One Monthly Goal is to turn the Daisy Sashiko panel I finished a couple months ago into a pouch. Several months ago I purchased this Pouch Kit from BeBe Bold. This is a project that I really enjoyed stitching, my favorite Sashiko project ever.

To-Do #1

I have sewn all the columns together for January-September for my three temp quilts. From left to right is my town in New Mexico, my stepdaughter’s city in the Bay Area in California, and my stepson’s city in Washington. I love the stained glass look of the Kona solids with natural sunlight behind them.

I enjoyed revisiting my 2022 projects and deciding on my five favorites. The Wolf quilt below is probably my all-time favorite quilt. Read about my other favorites here.

Five Favorite Finishes in 2022

Cheryl with Meadow Mist Designs hosts a yearly linky party to celebrate projects made in the past year. After much deliberation, I present to you my five favorite finishes of 2022. First up is my Wolf quilt that was completed on 1/4/22. The pattern was Wolf Abstractions by Violet Craft, and the quilt measured 60″ x 65″. This was the first quilt I had quilted by Rebecca Grace Quilting. Please read her post here that shares the details about all the extra time and effort Rebecca puts into her quilting.

My next favorite 2022 finish is a project I wanted to make for a few years and finally had the time this past summer to focus on it. It is called Murmuration, and it measures 62″ x 72″. The pattern is by Rebecca@Bryan House Quilts, and it was also quilted by Rebecca Grace Quilting. See details about this quilt here.

I have one more favorite finish that was also masterfully quilted by Rebecca Grace Quilting. It is my Offset Gradients quilt that measures 54″ x78″. Read more about this quilt here and here.

My last two 2022 favorites are small projects that I actually quilted myself. The herringbone placemats pictured below were a belated housewarming gift for my niece, Mary Frances. Read more about these placemats here and here.

Finally my last favorite finish for the year is a small rectangular 10″ x 15″ pillow with a center of Sashiko cats stitched with Weeks Variegated Caribbean Size 8 thread, and the bordering fabric was quilted with Aurafil Jade 50 wt thread (4093).

December 2022 OMG Finished

My December 2022 One Monthly Goal was to finish five Sashiko coasters and one Sashiko small rectangular pillow from Sashiko squares stitched this past year for Christmas/birthday presents for my friend Kristen who was born on Christmas Day. I’ll start with the 10″ x 15″ pillow as it is my favorite of these small finishes. I bought the cats stencil on Etsy, but the shop I bought it from no longer has it in stock. I did find it in a different Etsy shop. I first used this stencil when I made an Orange Sashiko Kitties Coaster for my friend, Wendy, who loves the color orange. For the cats on Kristen’s pillow, I used Weeks Variegated Caribbean Size 8 thread. Here’s the front of the pillow that I quilted with Aurafil Jade 50 wt thread (4093):

In case anyone is curious about the turquoise snowflakes above the pillow, those are the bottom part of a Turquoise Christmas Tree panel I had quilted by Sew Shabby Quilting a couple years ago.

Below is a pic of the flying geese units sewn together in joined columns for the months of October and November. New Mexico is the left, California is in the middle, and Washington is on the right. It feels so good to be getting EVEN closer to finishing these three temp quilts.
