April 2022 OMG

My April 2022 One Monthly Goal is to sew together the first quarter (January, February, and March 2022) of the THREE temperature quilts I am making this year. I’ve wanted to make a temperature quilt for the past couple years but then the pandemic hit, and I didn’t particularly want to commemorate 2020 or 2021, but hopefully we’ll move into endemic status in this year. The first temp quilt is for me in northern New Mexico, the second for my stepdaughter who lives in California, and the third for my stepson who lives in Washington. I am using the same Kona solids to depict each temperature range, and when they are finished, it will be so much fun to see the quilts next to each other and compare the different temperatures for each state.

I’m using 2″x4″ finished flying geese in all three quilts. I am paper-piecing all the flying geese using Lee@Freshly Pieced’ Perfect Flying Geese and keeping track of the date, state, and colors on the paper to help keep me organized. The units below show the first two weeks of January with a low of 1 (NM Jan 2 Violet) to a high of 65 (the large clover green triangle in NM Jan 7). The city I am tracking in CA shows the least disparity in the low and high temperatures, and the city I am tracking in WA is the only one so far that has the same fabric for both the low and high temps (Surf Jan 5). It took awhile to get organized, and I’ve found making the flying geese units on a daily basis works best for me.

Weekly Progress Update #137

To-Do for the week of March 22nd-28th:

  1. Get some pics of  the front of Lucy’s I Spy quilt and write a post about this finish. √Done
  2. Work on a set of placemats.√Done
  3. Bind a short runner for my sewing machine. √Done

To-Do #1

I wrote a post about finishing Lucy’s I Spy quilt (read it here) and got a decent shot of the front in between some wind gusts. I’m definitely putting the curtain rod on my shed to good use!

IMG_1011[1587]

To-Do #2

I decided that since I am such a fan of sunflowers that I need a set of four sunflower placemats and have chosen the use the Sunflower for Ukraine block for the center of the placemat, and I will sew 4″ x 12.5″ rectangles to either side to make the placemat the right size. I’ve gotten two blocks done so far. Here is the first one I made on Saturday.

IMG_1014[1589]

To-Do #3

I am delighted with how nice the Kantha Cloth by Valori Wells in Pomegranate purchased from Etsy shop Modern Quilter looks with some Alison Glass Kaleidoscope Pomegranate binding in the photo below. I love the Kantha running stitch so much (similar to Sashiko but there is not so much emphasis on uniformity of stitches) that I have decided to participate in Alison Glass’ Stitch Club 2022 Kantha Sew-Along that starts April 19th. I have plenty of gorgeous Alison Glass fabric, and I think 2022 is the year to start putting it to good use!

IMG_1016[1591]

To-Do for the week of March 29th-April 4th:

  1. Make two more Sunflower for Ukraine blocks.
  2. Work on some flying geese for my three temperature quilts.
  3. Write my April 2022 OMG post.

I Spy Quilt for Lucy

I have a very special little girl in my life who will turn one next month. Her name is Luciana but we generally call her Lucy. I’ve made an I Spy quilt that measures 40″ square to commemorate the celebration of her first birthday. I chose the colors to go with the baby quilt I made for her last year. I love the soft Scribble quilting pattern used by Melissa at Sew Shabby Quilting:

Weekly Progress Update #136

To-Do for the week of March 15th-21st:

  1. Make two mini Pineapple coasters. Nope
  2. Bind Lucy’s I Spy quilt. √Done
  3. Work on my temperature quilts flying geese and/or Peloton project. √Done
  4. Watch the How To Videos for my Emeril Lagasse Air Fryer and try a recipe in the coming week. √Done

To-Do #1

I did start making a couple paper-pieced Pineapple coasters but ran into some difficulties sewing the different sections together, and honestly I just wasn’t having fun. I decided it’s time to take a break from fiddly paper-piecing. I absolutely love straight-forward paper piecing like my temperature flying geese and my Peloton units, so I haven’t lost my fondness for sewing on paper! And most likely I’ll do some more complicated paper-piecing down the road like this Colorburst Quilt Block from Sassafras Lane that I purchased yesterday.

To-Do #2

I got Lucy’s I Spy quilt bound on Sunday, but it was too windy to take an outside photo. I decided to just take a pic of the quilt back which I just love. It features Sarah Watts’ Birthday Panel in Teal.

IMG_1002[1585]

To-Do #3

I continued to make daily flying geese for my temp quilts and also made some progress on my Peloton project. Here’s a photo of the units I paper-pieced for Weeks 5-8 of 2022 (Jan 29th-Feb 25th). What looks like burgundy is actually Alison Glass Pomegranate, and those strips signify 10 minutes on the bike. The Citrus yellow is 15 minutes, Poppy is 20 minutes and the Dragonfly (turquoise) is 25 minutes on the Peloton bike.

To-Do #4

I watched the Air Fryer videos and made pork chops on Sunday in my new air fryer. Unfortunately they were a little overdone. I think my next recipe is going to be green beans. My hair stylist raved about how good green beans tossed with some grated parmesan cheese are made in the air fryer.

To-Do for the week of March 22nd-28th:

  1. Get some pics of  the front of Lucy’s I Spy quilt and write a post about this finish.
  2. Work on a set of placemats.
  3. Bind a short runner for my sewing machine using Kantha cloth by Valori Wells in Pomegranate.

Weekly Progress Update #135

To-Do for the week of March 8th-14th:

  1. Work on my Sushi quilt top. √Done
  2. Work on my Peloton project. √Done
  3. Post a couple more times on #IGQUILTFEST2022.√Done

To-Do #1

I was able to get the last four borders done on my Sushi quilt this past week and on Monday I sent it off to Melissa at Sew Shabby Quilting for edge-to-edge quilting. I had started the appliquéd paws a couple weeks ago. Please don’t anyone think that I am developing much appliqué proficiency because that is definitely NOT the case. I would rather paper piece any darn day!!! Finishing this quilt top is my March One Monthly Goal and I will be linking up with Elm Street Quilts later this month. I wasn’t very happy with the pic below, but I just wanted to get a quick photo before taking it in the house and getting it ready to send to Melissa.

IMG_0990[1566]

To-Do #2

I worked on my first Peloton inset circle using the tutorial by Susan at Quilt Fabrication. I used Applipops to create the small block circle in the middle. It is glued down but still needs to hand-stitched on (yes, appliqué again!). My seams all meet in the middle, and I honestly wasn’t sure what do with the bulky seam allowances, so I reached out to Rebecca at Rebecca Grace Quilting knowing that I want her to quilt this project for me when I finish it in early 2023. I have to say that Rebecca was so helpful and supportive. She suggested trimming the bulk with duck billed scissors which I did not have but yesterday ordered a Tula Pink pair. I absolutely recommend Rebecca for her exceptional longarm quilting. She’s highly skilled and knowledgeable and is a wonderful collaborator.

To-Do #3

I posted four times this past week on the #IGQUILTFEST2022 as @MRINGER58. My favorite post was on Day 9 of the quilt fest when I shared about a coveted quilt that I absolutely love. This is what I wrote:

Today’s topic is Coveted Quilt. I recently saw a photo of Sarah Schreiner’s 2020 Temperature Quilt that was on display at QuiltCon 2022 in Phoenix. It is jaw-droppingly gorgeous! Here is a pic of Sarah with her masterpiece!

To-Do for the week of March 15th-21st:

  1. Make two mini Pineapple coasters.
  2. Bind Lucy’s I Spy quilt.
  3. Work on my temperature quilts flying geese and/or Peloton project.
  4. I generally don’t put any non-quilting items on my weekly To Do List on my blog, but I’m going to make an exception this week as I need some accountability. My brother and sister-in-law recently sent me an Emeril Lagasse Air Fryer. I need to watch the How To Videos and try a recipe in the coming week. Feel free to share any favorite Air Fryer recipes with me!

Weekly Progress Update #134

To-Do for the week of Feb 28th-March 7th:

  1. Write my March 2022 OMG post. √Done
  2. Work on temperature and/or Peloton units. √Done

To-Do #1

My March One Monthly Goal is to make a quilt top for my stepson, Drew, that features a paper-pieced rendition of his beloved Boston Terrier, Sushi. (Read my post about this monthly goal here). This past week I used tutorials from Wendy@Pieceful Thoughts for both the Improv Wavy Strips and the Signature Block borders. I will be adding four more borders to complete this quilt top.

IMG_0983[1559]

To-Do #2

I’ve continued to make daily flying geese for my temp quilts but didn’t work on my Peloton Quilt Your Life project this past week (though I’ve ridden my Peloton bike everyday for at least 10 minutes), but it is definitely on the list for this coming week.

To-Do for the week of March 8th-14th:

  1. Work on my Sushi quilt top.
  2. Work on my Peloton project.
  3. I’ve posted a couple times on the #IGQUILTFEST2022 as MRINGER58. I hope to post a couple more times in the coming week.

March 2022 OMG

My March 2022 One Monthly Goal is to make a quilt top that has a paper-pieced Boston Terrier block (pattern by Kid Giddy) as the center. The quilt will be for my stepson, Drew, and features his Boston Terrier, Sushi. I will using the same borders that I used for my SAHRR 2022 quilt top, but I am adding one more border that has Sushi’s name (paper pieced using From Blank Page’s My First Alphabet  pattern).

Here is a photo that has Sushi in the bottom right corner when Drew is helping to hold my Wolf quilt that I made for my friend, Laura.

Weekly Progress Update #133

To-Do for the week of Feb 21st-27th:

  1. Make the last border for 2022 SAHRR. √Done
  2. Start working on another dog quilt. √Done
  3. Work on temperature and/or Peloton units. √Done

To-Do #1

I really had fun participating in this year’s Stay at Home Round Robin (SAHRR) hosted by Gail@ Quilting Gail. I’m a little sorry that I won’t wake up tomorrow and receive another border prompt! Chris@Chris Knits was responsible for the last border assignment, and she chose the Shoo Fly block which gives the perfect opportunity for a fussy cut center square. This sixth and final border is my biggest border and was 5″ unfinished. It also gave me the opportunity to feature the dark French Bulldog fabric from Christopher Thompson’s Blue Carolina collection. My lap-size quilt top finishes at 53″ square.

IMG_0961[1549]

To-Do #2

I have made progress on my next dog-themed quilt which I will share about on Tuesday when Patty@Elm Street Quilts opens the March 2022 One Monthly Goal linky party.

To-Do #3

I’ve continued to make daily flying geese for my temp quilts. I have paper-pieced squares for the first 8 weeks of 2022 completed for my Peloton project and sometime in March plan to make make two inset circles. This coming week is pretty busy but maybe the following week.

Sunflower for Ukraine

Kristy at Quiet Play has been raising money for the people of Ukraine through the sales of a new pattern called Sunflower for Ukraine. She donated the sales of this pattern to UNICEF Ukraine Emergency Appeal. When the sales of this paid pattern became too overwhelming, Kristy decided to make the pattern free with the request to make a donation to a charity to support the Ukraine. Yesterday Kristy sent out a newsletter that included other ways to help Ukraine, and she provided a link to a different paper-pieced sunflower pattern by Rachel@Kohatu Patterns who is donating the proceeds from the purchase of this pattern to UNICEF during the month of March. I’ve downloaded Kristy’s sunflower block and have also purchased Rachel’s sunflower block (because I can’t have enough sunflower block patterns!), though I won’t be making either of them soon as my current quilting to-do list is long enough! I do want to share a photo of the block my cousin McKenzie (who is on Instagram as @bogey_and_bobbins) made using Kristy’s pattern. I love how she simplified the design using a complex brown fabric.

Weekly Progress Update #132

To-Do for the week of Feb 14th-20th:

  1. Finish Lucy’s I Spy quilt top. √Done
  2. Make the fifth border for SAHRR. √Done
  3. Work on temperature and/or Peloton units. √Done

To-Do #1

Below is a pic of the I Spy quilt top for Lucy’s first birthday in April. I used some 5″ inch squares from an I Spy assortment I purchased on Etsy but also had fun cutting some squares from my stash such as the horse, the trailer, the butterfly, and the chickens. Melissa with Sew Shabby Quilting has already received my quilt top (and a super cute backing panel), so I should be able to make Lucy’s April 13th birthday.

IMG_0926[1543]

To-Do #2

I can’t tell you how much I am enjoying participating in this year’s Stay at Home Round Robin (SAHRR) hosted by Gail@ Quilting Gail. I’m already hoping there will be a 2023 SAHRR! Gail and several co-hosts are taking turns each week to share a border prompt. Gail is responsible for Week Five, and she gave us two options, either applique or rail fence. Rail fence would have been a snap to make with either three or four equal width strips sewn together, but I just wasn’t feeling it. I’ve only done a bit of applique, and I’m far from confident with this piecing technique, but then I thought how cute some doggie paw prints would look. I found an image online and managed to make four 4″ squares with none-too-uniform needle-turned appliqued paw prints on them that I’m pretty happy with. At this point my project measures about 43″ square.

IMG_0941[1545]

To-Do #3

I am keeping up with the flying geese units for my three temperature quilts, generally completing them first thing each morning. The first column depicts the temps in my town in northern New Mexico. The second is for my stepdaughter who lives in the Bay Area in California, and the third is for my stepson who currently lives in the state of Washington. Below are the units for all three locales for February 1st-14th. They show quite a range of temperatures from -2 depicted as the low in my NM town Jan 3rd & 4th (Kona Orchid Ice) to a high of 76 on Jan 10th & 11th in a Bay Area city in CA Jan (Kona Chartreuse).

To-Do Tuesday 131 Weekly Progress Update

To-Do for the week of Feb 7th-13th:

  1. Work on the fourth border for SAHRR. √Done
  2. Make more economy blocks for Lucy’s I Spy Quilt. √Done
  3. Work on temperature and/or Peloton units. √Done

To-Do #1

My friend, Wendy, at Pieceful Thoughts chose the signature block for the fourth border for our Stay at Home Round Robin (SAHRR). I decided that the light French Bull Dog fabric from Christopher Thompson’s Blue Carolina collection would be perfect since I could cut the dogs on the diagonal for the signature blocks. Of course bias cutting tends to eat up more fabric than straight cuts, so I chose to only make eight signature blocks. Getting the dogs going the right direction and not upside down proved to be challenging especially when I was sewing Saturday afternoon and starting to run out of steam. I definitely had to use my seam ripper and do some re-sewing. My SAHRR project now measures about 35.5″ square.

IMG_0921[1539]

To-Do #2

I actually finished the last six economy blocks for Lucy’s I Spy quilt on Saturday and got the layout designed. I plan to share the finished quilt top next Sunday. Here is one of my favorite blocks that I think is perfect for a toddler quilt:

IMG_0920[1541]

To-Do #3

I am up-to-date on my flying geese units for all three temperature quilts but need to make a unit that captures the data for my rides on the Peloton bike last week. I hope to post a progress photo or two next week.

To-Do for the week of Feb 14th-20th:

  1. Finish Lucy’s I Spy quilt top.
  2. Make the fifth border for SAHRR.
  3. Work on temperature and/or Peloton units.
