Weekly Progress Update #130

To-Do for the week of Jan 31st-Feb 6th:

  1. Write my January 2022 Favorite Finish post. √Done
  2. Write my Feb 2022 OMG post. √Done
  3. Work on the third border for SAHRR. √Done

To-Do #1

I did get my January 2022 Favorite Finish written. Read the details about it here. The Wolf quilt for my friend, Laura. actually is the all-time favorite quilt I’ve ever made. I love how he looks hanging from the curtain rod on my shed. Laura is planning to hang this quilt in her bedroom on a high wall. How cool is that? She bought a quilt hanging apparatus and needed a quilt sleeve to use it, so I quickly got one sewn and in the mail to her.

Just Added Sunday Night

Laura sent me some photos of her with the quilt as well as one of the back that I decided to include in this post. I especially love the first one where she is holding her cat, Rikki, and smiling at her dog, Ishwa, who shares gorgeous blue eyes with the wolf. The last photo is of the quilt back.

To-Do #2

I also got my February 2022 One Monthly Goal post written (read about it here). Below is the first of 25 economy blocks I will be making for an I Spy quilt for Lil Lucy who will turn one in April.

To-Do #3

We received our third border prompt for SAHRR2022 from Roseanne of Home Sewn By Us on Monday. Roseanne chose stars, and I decided to make four paper-pieced stars modifying a border block from Kristy Lea’s Quiet Play Pattern Club 2021. These stars took awhile to make, so I decided to just make four corner stars, which gave me an opportunity to feature a lovely large-scale print from Christoper Thompson’s Blue Carolina fabric collection in the main part of the 3.5″ border. With the three borders, my piece now measures 28″ square. I really do need to take an outside pic soon because the stars are not nearly as dark as they look in the indoor photo below.

To-Do for the week of Feb 7th-13th:

  1. Make more economy blocks for Lucy’s I Spy Quilt..
  2. Work on the fourth border for SAHRR.
  3. Work on temperature and/or Peloton units.

IMG_0906[1464]

My February 2022 One Monthly Goal is to make an I Spy quilt top for my friend Kristen’s baby Lucy who will turn one in April. The toddler quilt will have a total of 25 eight-inch finished economy blocks in teal/turquoise and purples to go with the first quilt I made for Lucy right before she was born. Here she is on her Cat & Birds quilt a few months ago looking absolutely adorable!

January 2022 Favorite Finish

I am so happy to share that I finished my Wolf quilt in early January and my friend, Laura, received it mid-January a few days before her 50th birthday. Below are two photos I took of it hanging on the curtain rod on our shed. I absolutely love how these photos show off the wolf in all his majesty!

IMG_0819[1489]

IMG_0820[1493]

I actually took it on a trip to Sedona, AZ, the second weekend in January when we went there to meet my stepson, his partner, and his dog, Sushi. The town of Sedona was packed because of the nice weather, and many places to park were full, so I only took one photo of the quilt in Sedona. I do like how the rock in the background complements the quilt (you get a partial view of Sushi in the pic below, but trust me, he is such a cute dog! I’m planning to make a quilt for Drew’s birthday in May that features a Boston Terrier).

IMG_0838[1491]

Rebecca of Rebecca Grace Quilting did an exceptional job quilting Laura’s quilt. Please read her post here that shares the details about all the extra time and effort Rebecca puts into her quilting. I love the pic below of the wolf quilt on her long arm machine. Those eye!!!

We received our second border prompt for SAHRR2022 from Emily of The Darling Dogwood on Monday. Jan 2022 OMG Finish

My January 2022 One Monthly Goal was to finish my Treasure Hunt Bee Hive block quilt top. Please see my Jan 2022 OMG post for more details about these blocks. Sewing these blocks together into a quilt top didn’t go quite as smoothly as I had hoped. Some hive members used too big of a stitch length, and when I ripped out the paper, parts of seams had to be re-sewed. One member used the wrong size paper template, so unfortunately I was not able to use her 8 blocks for this project. My biggest puzzlement was why some of the blocks I received had corners clipped that necessitated me ironing on squares of fusible interfacing, so the seams could be sewn to the end. Perhaps the rectangles used for the strip piecing were cut with a die?

The majority of the blocks were nicely made using a pleasing assortment of fabrics, and overall, I’m happy with how the quilt top looks and believe it will make a nice donation quilt when it is finished.

To-Do Tuesday 128 Weekly Progress Update

To-Do for the week of Jan 18th-24th:

  1. Start working on the first border for SAHRR2022. √Done
  2. Start sewing my Treasure Hunt the units into rows. √Done
  3. Work on a Peloton unit and/or Temperature flying geese. √Done

To-Do #1

We received our first border prompt from Anja of Anja Quilts last Monday, and I was excited to see it was curves as we chose to interpret them. A few years ago, I was not such a fan of curves but have played with them over the past four years, and then on Friday my friend Wendy@Pieceful Thoughts posted an Improv Wavy Strips Tutorial that helped me feel more comfortable with improv curves. And it was fun making these borders!

IMG_0877[1452]

To-Do #2

I got all my Treasure Hunt blocks sewn into rows on Saturday and then started sewing the rows together. Below is a wind-blown pic of Rows 9 & 10 sewn together.

IMG_0875[1456]

To-Do #3

I have the first three weeks of my Peloton blocks paper-pieced. I will share more about what the colors mean, but the citrus yellow is definitely the color that stands out the most, and it signifies 15 minutes on my Peloton bike. So far I haven’t had to use Charcoal Grey which means no physical activity for that day.

IMG_0879[1454]

To-Do for the week of Jan 25th-Jan 31st:

  1. Finish my Treasure Hunt quilt top and write my Jan 2022 OMG Finish post.
  2. Start working on the second border for SAHRR2022.
  3. Work on a Peloton unit and/or Temperature flying geese.

To-Do Tuesday 127 Weekly Progress Update

To-Do for the week of Jan 11th-17th:

  1. Make flying geese for Jan 2-7 for my NM, CA, and WA temperature quilts. Perhaps make some headway on the second week of January. √Done
  2. Write a blog post about participating in this years Stay at Home Robin Robin (abbreviated SAHRR2022) and share about my center block on Quilting Gail’s Linky Party. √Done
  3. Start designing the layout of my Treasure Hunt quilt. √Done

To-Do #1

I am paper-piecing all the flying geese and keeping track of the date, state, and colors on the paper to help keep me organized. The units below show a low of 1 (the two violet smaller triangles in NM Jan 2) to a high of 65 (the large clover green triangle in NM Jan 7). The city I am tracking in CA shows the least disparity in the low and high temperatures, and the city I am tracking in WA is the only one so far that has the same fabric for both the low and high temps (Surf Jan 5). Now that I’ve gotten myself a little more organized, I’m starting to have fun with these projects.

IMG_0863[1450]

To-Do #2

Here’s the post I wrote about participating in this year’s round robin: SAHRR2022–I’m In

IMG_0852[1446]

To-Do #3

I got my design boards out and decided on an arrangement of 100 units forming 25 blocks for my Treasure Hunt donation quilt. The photo below shows the upper left quadrant of the design.

IMG_0871[1448]

To-Do for the week of Jan 18th-Jan 24th:

  1. Start sewing my Treasure Hunt the units into rows.
  2. Start working on the first border for SAHRR2022.
  3. Work on a Peloton unit and/or Temperature flying geese.

SAHRR2022–I’m In

Last year I read everyone’s posts for the Stay At Home Round Robin (SAHRR) hosted by Quilting Gail, and a big part of me was SO tempted to join in, but I had committed myself to TOO many other projects. This year my quilting dance card is filling up, but I still have room for another project or two (or ???!) I am especially drawn to the opportunity to play with quilt design. My center block will be a 12.5″ square practice block I made almost four years ago before I made the Quatrefoil French Bulldog Quilts for my colleague’s twin baby girls.

IMG_0852[1446]

The cute little French Bulldog ears fabric is from Christopher Thompson’s Blue Carolina fabric collection. He is better known as the The Tattoed Quilter. I have several other fabrics from this collection stashed away that will be perfect for this year’s SAHRR. It’s going to be fun to interpret the different border prompts, and it’s great to have the option to skip a border if it doesn’t seem like it will work for my project.

To-Do Tuesday 126 Weekly Progress Update 1-11-22

To-Do for the week of 12/28/21-1/3/22:

  2. Make flying geese for Jan 2-7 for my NM, CA, and WA temperature quilts. Nope
  3. Make progress with a project that I will share about later this month. √Done

To-Do #1

I did get the first week paper pieced of my Peleton project using Alison Glass Kaleidoscope fabrics. From left to right, the strawberry on Jan 1st denotes 40 minutes of riding, Mermaid on Jan 2nd 30 minutes on the bike, on Jan 3rd Dragonfly represents 35 minutes of riding, Jan 4th 10 minutes on the bike, Pomegranate, is the middle position, on Jan 5th and 6th shown as Poppy are 20 minutes of riding on each day, and Jan 7th on the far right shown by Pomegranate is 10 minutes on the bike.

To-Do #2

I went out of town over the weekend and was exhausted when I got home, so I did not get my flying geese made for the three temperature quilts. I’m planning to get caught up with Week One of my temperature quilts this coming week and perhaps make some headway with Week Two.

To-Do #3

I did make significant progress on a project that I plan to share about next week.

To-Do for the week of Jan 11th-17th:

  1. Make flying geese for Jan 2-7 for my NM, CA, and WA temperature quilts. Perhaps make some headway on the second week of January.

To-Do Tuesday 125 Weekly Progress Update 1-4-22

To-Do for the week of 12/28/21-1/3/22:

  1. Bind my Blakely Family Sew-Along Quilt.√Done
  2. Write my January 2022 One Monthly Goal post. √Done
  3. Get templates printed and start cutting fabric for my temperature quilts and my Quilt Your Life project. √Done

To-Do #1

In March 2021 I saw that Meghan with Then Came June came out with a new pattern named after her new niece, Blakely. (Read the back story in her post Blakely – the Namesake One.) I sent an email about this quilt to my Aunt Lois, her daughter, Sally, and Sally’s daughter, McKenzie, who are quilters and who are all Blakely descendants like me. Aunt Lois who now 91 is the youngest of the Blakely fifteen children and is the only one still alive. We decided to do a Blakely Family Sew-Along over several weeks in September and October 2021. Lois, Sally, McKenzie and her son who is learning to sew as well as one of Lois’ granddaughters, Josie, and I all participated and sent emails, Instagram posts, and texts with photos to cheer each other on.

You may remember that I had a few glitches with this quilt project including mixing up the narrow sashing strips (the ones within the blocks are 1.25″, and the ones that separate the blocks are 1.5″) and after sewing the quilt top together finding a hole in one of the long vertical sashing strips that had to be removed, cut again (thankfully I had extra fabric), and sewn back together again. It was worth it in the end because I ended up with a quilt that has a very special family connection for me.

Cara with Sew Colorado Quilting did a wonderful job quilting pansies using a 30 wt grey ombré thread which she went out and bought just for this project. I really like how well the flowers show up on the white-on-white leaf fabric with the heavier thread.

IMG_0807[1429]

I used a beautiful Hoffman Floral Onyx Gray Panel for the quilt back:

IMG_0809[1433]

I love the label that my cousin, Sally, machine embroidered and sent me to attach to my finished Blakely quilt.

IMG_0812[1431]

Sally also sent me this great photo of quilt tops finished by Aunt Lois, Sally, McKenzie, and her 11-year-old son. They are pictured from right to left:

IMG_0815[1435]

To-Do #2

I wrote about turning old Treasure Hunt blocks into a 2022 Donation Quilt here:

IMG_0786[1424]

To-Do #3

I got the flying geese made for 1/1/22 for my New Mexico, California, and Washington temperature quilts. They look pretty meager on their own, so I’ll share a pic next week of the units for Week 1 of these temperature quilts.

To-Do for the week of Jan 4th-10th:

  1. Paper piece Week 1 of my Peloton project.
  2. Make flying geese for Jan 2-7 for my NM, CA, and WA temperature quilts.
  3. Make progress with a project that I will share about later this month.
