October 2021 OMG

My October 2021 One Monthly Goal is to make a quilt top featuring a Northern Lights panel surrounded by wonky stars made with leftover fabric from my Ombré Lotus Quilt. I used HQ Stitch’s Make a Wonky Star tutorial to make my stars. Below is a pic of the four wonky stars I recently made:

To-Do Tuesday 111 Weekly Progress Update

To-Do for the week of Sept 21st- 27th:

  1. Work on a simple I Spy quilt top. √Done
  2. Write my 2021 September OMG Finish post. √Done
  3. Cut fabric for our family Blakely Sew-Along. √Done
  4. Take a Quilt Edge Finishings online workshop with Nicholas Ball through CraftyMonkies. √Done

To-Do #1

I made a simple I Spy quilt top using this tutorial for a special child in my life who will turn one in December (her parents are not comfortable with any kind of specific online reference to her, so I’m respecting their wishes). I found I needed to cut my longer sashing strips 6″ long rather than 5.5″ as stated in the tutorial. It was a quick quilt top to make that I was able to finish in less than a week.

To-Do #2

I wrote about my North Stars quilt top finish in my September 2021 OMG Finish post.

To-Do #3

I got all the cutting done for my family Blakely Sew-Along project and saved a lot of time using my Accuquilt strip cutter to cut the 2.5 inch strips. This is hands-down my most subdued ombré project this year!

To-Do #4

I really enjoyed the Quilt Edge Finishings online workshop with Nicholas Ball through CraftyMonkies on 9/26/21. I took a lot of notes and screen shots. I really want to try his pillow case facing method (see class demonstration photo below) as well as the Welsh Knife Edge technique. I could not find the pillow case finishing method anywhere online but I did find a post on Welsh Quilts: How to Sew a Traditional or Knife Edge. Nicholas’ method is a little different and much clearer to me than the Welsh Quilts tutorial, but it is a cool way to finish a quilt without using extra binding or facing fabric.

To-Do for the week of Sept 28th-Oct 4th:

  1. Stitch a grey Sashiko square with variegated turquoise floss.
  2. Write my October 2021 OMG post.
  3. Make some ombré wonky stars for my Oct ’21 OMG project.

September 2021 OMG Finish

My September 2021 One Monthly Goal was to make a throw-size Christmas North Stars quilt for my sister-in-law, Sharon. When I visited California in July, I showed her the pattern, and she chose the muskox, the foxes, the reindeer, and the bear but requested it be a brown bear instead. We decided to use a muted Christmas palette of some dark and olive green, red with a tinge of brown, cream/brown, gold, and taupe/grey.

IMG_0495[1000]

Below is my initial fabric pull that included fabrics from Tim Holtz’ Christmastime collection that captured that palette perfectly (I especially love the Christmas Carol fabric that I used in all four blocks), supplemented with several Essex Linen fabrics, and some fabrics from my stash. Moments after I snapped the photo I added additional fabrics from my stash, and there are several fabrics in the photo that I didn’t use. My favorite add-on fabric is the cardinal fabric that I fussy cut for flying geese units in the bear and foxes blocks. My background fabric is Essex Homespun Silver and the sashing fabric which is subtly different than the quilt background is Essex Homespun Charcoal. I love the texture of these fabrics, but they definitely fray easily.

Here are close-ups of all the blocks in the order I made them:

I sent the quilt top and some grey minky fabric off to Jessica who has quilted a couple other projects for me. She is on Instagram as @sugarmillquilts. It arrived safely yesterday, and I can’t wait for her to work her magic on this project.

I’ve started to read some posts about binding quilts that have a minky backing. I’m wondering if you all have any tips for me? Have you sewed the binding on both sides with your sewing machine (which is what I’ve been doing lately) or have you had more success with hand-stitching the binding on the minky side? It does seem that a wider binding would work better than a narrow binding.

To-Do Tuesday 110 Weekly Progress Update

To-Do for the week of Sept 14th-20th:

  1. Work on the Fritz & Fred Foxes block for the North Stars quilt for my SIL Sharon. √Done
  2. Stitch a grey Sashiko square with variegated turquoise floss. √Done
  3. Finish pulling fabric for our family Blakely Sew-Along. √Done

To-Do #1

For the last 24″ square block for Sharon’s North Star quilt, I made the Fritz & Fred Foxes block. I used the a red grunge fabric for the foxes and the same coordinating fabrics as I used for the Brown Bear block. I was able to get the quilt top finished on Sunday and will share about it in the OMG post I’ll write in the coming week.

IMG_0487[991]

To-Do #2

I used a plastic Sashiko stencil to trace the image of a Cherry Blossom (Sakura) and used my pretty variegated Caribbean perle floss to stitch the flower. I’m planning to make a set Sashiko coasters using this floss on grey cloth as a Christmas gift.

To-Do Tuesday 109 Weekly Progress Update

To-Do for the week of Sept 7th-13th:

  1. Make the second block for the North Stars quilt for my sister-in-law, Sharon. √Done
  2. Start cutting fabric for the third North Stars block. √Done
  3. Write a post about my finished Ombré Lotus quilt. √Done

To-Do #1

For the second 24″ square block for Sharon’s North Star quilt, I made the Meredith Muskox block. I used three different Essex linen fabrics for the ox, more fussy cut squares and rectangles out of Tim Holtz’ Christmas Carol fabric, and some taupe, gold, and red fabric from my stash.

IMG_0474[981]

To-Do #2

I had an unexpected time windfall Friday afternoon when our governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, gave state workers four hours of seasonal leave for all our hard work during the pandemic, so I not only got the pieces cut for the Reggie Reindeer block but was able to get it done on Sunday. It went together fairly quickly since it is the same color scheme as the muskox block, and I had already had some fussy cut Christmas Carol fabric plus some HSTs previously done.

Ombré Lotus Quilt Finished

In early July I opened a newsletter from Purple Daisies Quilting and fell in love with the Ombré Lotus pattern featured on their website. It is a Needle in a Hayes Stack pattern featuring Ombré Bloom by V and Co. for Moda. I had a Fairy Dust Jelly Roll on hand which has a similar color distribution as Ombré Bloom. I had to order a couple extra Ombré Fairy Dust half-yards to have all the necessary colors available for this quilt. Below is a pic at the local university where I like to photograph my large quilts. This one measures 81″ x 81″.

IMG_0447[969]

I decided to paper-piece the units to make the quilt top. My main reason is that I did not want to trim the width of the jelly roll strips from 2.5″ to 2.25″ as was instructed in the pattern. So I made the choice to use my untrimmed jelly roll strips on an 8-inch equilateral triangle paper template which is a bit bigger than the pattern template. I found I was just a little short on fabric, so I purchased another Fairy Dust jelly roll knowing that I will use the leftovers for another quilt this year. It took me awhile to figure out the best way to match the odd angles of the triangles so the seams lined up, and using a basting stitch first and making any necessary adjustments before sewing the regular-stitch seam dramatically increased my precision. Here’s a close-up of the very center of the quilt top.

IMG_0398[903]

The finished size of the original Ombré Lotus pattern is 62″ x 62″. Mine is quite a bit larger due to using a larger template size and as well as much wider borders (8 1/2″ rather than 3 1/2″). I know the quilt will shrink when I wash it, so I deliberately oversized it, so it will continue to look good on my bed. Here’s a pic with my Ombré Planner wall hanging behind it.

IMG_0468[977]

The background fabric is Kona Titanium, and the binding is Turquoise Fairy Dust. Before I started quilting, I never realized how many different shades of grey there are. Some day I’m going to have to make some custom shams to replace my store-bought grey shams, so my greys go together better. I also love the dragonfly backing for this quilt in the photo below.

IMG_0449[971]

The dragonflies are easier to see in the close-up below as is the pretty Sea of Stars quilting done by Cara at Sew Colorado Quilting.

I love how she sent my quilt back to me with a ribbon tied around it:

To-Do Tuesday 108 Weekly Progress Update

To-Do for the week of Aug 31-Sept 6:

  1. Quilt and bind my Modified Fancy Forest Quilt. √Done
  2. Make the first block for the North Stars quilt for my sister-in-law, Sharon. √Done
  3. Start cutting fabric for the second North Stars block. √Done

To-Do #1

Over the holiday weekend, I quilted and bound my Modified Fancy Forest Quilt (original pattern by Elizabeth Hartman). I quilted simple wavy lines and was able to avoid quilting over the black eyes and noses. I’m so glad to have finished this 27″ x 39.5″ wall hanging. These foxes and hedgehogs just make me smile.

IMG_0451[963]

To-Do #2

For Sharon’s North Star quilt, I chose to make the bear block using brown grunge fabric for the bear. I had fun fussy cutting squares and rectangles out of Tim Holtz’ Christmas Carol fabric. And I raided my Christmas fabric bins and found the cardinal fabric with a light brown background and some olive green snowflake fabric. The bear looks darker in the photo below than it actually is.

IMG_0454[961]

To-Do #3

I have all the pieces cut for the next North Stars block. I’ll keep you all in suspense until next week regarding which block I decided to make next 🙂

To-Do for the week of Sept 7th- 13th:

  1. Make the second block for the North Stars quilt for my sister-in-law, Sharon.
  2. Start cutting fabric for the third North Stars block.
  3. Write a post about my finished Ombré Lotus quilt (Woo Hoo!).

September 2021 OMG

My September 2021 One Monthly Goal is to make a throw-size Christmas North Stars quilt for my sister-in-law, Sharon. Last year I made a North Stars Quilt to include in my Christmas decorating that has a white polar bear, two otters, a walrus, and a seal. When I showed Sharon the pattern and told her she could pick four of the blocks, she chose the muskox, the foxes, the reindeer, and the bear but requested it be a brown bear instead. We decided to use a muted Christmas palette of some dark and olive green, red with a tinge of brown, cream/brown, gold, and taupe/grey. I ordered some fabrics from Tim Holtz’ Christmastime collection that captured that palette perfectly, supplemented with several Essex Linen fabrics, and some fabrics from my stash. Below is a pic of the the pattern and the fabrics I pulled but of course after I took the photo, I added a couple other fabrics!

To-Do Tuesday 107 Weekly Progress Update

To-Do for the week of Aug 24th-30th:

  1. Finish appliquéing the petals on my Lotus Blossom quilt and write my August OMG Finish post. √Done
  2. Make the binding for my Modified Fancy Forest Quilt. √Done
  3. Pull some fabric for a family Sew-Along in September. √Done

To-Do #1

I did finish appliquéing the petals and leaves on my Lotus Blossom quilt and was able to finish it with machine binding (which is SO much faster than hand-stitching the binding down on the back side of the quilt. It doesn’t look as good as my hand-stitched binding, but as they say “Finished is better than perfect!”). I wrote about my decision to appliqué the circle where the petals and leaves join in my August 2021 One Monthly Goal post.

IMG_0408[913]

To-Do #2

I’m using the same Alison Glass Raven Kaleidoscope fabric for the binding for my Modified Fancy Forest quilt as I did in Lotus Blossom quilt above. It is ready to use over the Labor Day holiday.

To-Do #3

I am participating in a Blakely Quilt Sew-Along with several family members that starts mid-September. I’ve wanted to make a black/grey/white quilt for a long time, and when Meghan with Then Came June shared about her Black and White Blakely quilt, I felt inspired to make my own version. Some of you may remember me working on a “Blakely-esque” quilt in April. I explained about the family connection in this post. I only found two fabrics that I want to use from my stash, so I ordered more fabric over the weekend. I may add some grey solid fabric if it starts to look too busy.

IMG_0415[929]

To-Do for the week of Aug 24th-30th:

  1. Quilt and bind my Modified Fancy Forest Quilt.
  2. Make the first block for the North Stars quilt for my sister-in-law, Sharon.
  3. Start cutting fabric for the second North Stars block.

August 2021 OMG Finish

My August 2021 One Monthly Goal was to appliqué by hand a lotus blossom on the lower half of a 41″ x 48″ quilt which was made using various widths of Ombré Metallic Dots Confetti fabric sewn together using the Lotus Blossom Quilt Pattern from Wefty Needle. I finished appliquéing the petals and leaves of the lotus blossom on Saturday but wasn’t happy with how the petals and leaves joined. I remembered that Sarah Fielke whose appliqué class I took in February through QuiltCon has a tutorial on her website on How to Make Perfect Appliqué Circles. I like how the little circle gives the lotus blossom a more finished look.

IMG_0408[913]

The quilting was done by Sew Shabby Quilting using a pattern called Mist. The binding was made with Kaleidoscope Raven fabric. The backing fabric is a black and white lotus flower fabric ordered through Spoon Flower.
