June 2022 OMG Finished

My June 2022 One Monthly Goal was to make 50 more diamonds for a quilt I’ve wanted to make for awhile using the Murmuration pattern by Rebecca@Bryan House Quilts. So far I’ve used 20 different Kona solids and am thinking of adding another two or three colors. Below is a pic of the 60 diamonds I’ve made so far for this project in nowhere near the final layout:

Here are the first nine diamonds I made over the Memorial Day weekend:

IMG_1263[1850]

I will be making a total of 93 diamonds plus 30 triangles in the final layout. Finishing this quilt top will most likely be my July OMG.

Weekly Progress Update #149

To-Do for the week of June 13th-19th:

  1. Visit a new-to-me quilt store. √Done
  2. Work on a  second Sashiko square using my favorite variegated Caribbean perle floss on grey cloth. √Done
  3. Make more Murmuration diamonds. √Done

To-Do #1

I actually visited two new-to-me quilt shops in the past week. The first one was Quilting Folks, and it is in Rockledge, Florida. I visited my long-time friend, Annette, arriving Friday June 17th and getting back to New Mexico on Wednesday June 22nd. Annette lives two long blocks from the beach. Below is the pic I took during a glorious morning stroll:

Here’s a photo of Annette with her favorite fabric at Quilting Folks.

And here’s me with pretty teal Sphere fabric by Zen Chic (and yes I did come home with a yard cut of it!)

IMG_1292[1877]

I actually visited two new-to-me quilt shops in the past week. The second quilt store we went to was Quilts and Lace, and it is in Melbourne, Florida. I picked up an interesting table runner and placemats pattern there called Mitered Magic.

IMG_1311[1875]

The last full day I was in Florida Annette and I went to a little park where manatees are known to frequent. While we didn’t see a manatee that day, we did have a close sighting of a gator! Annette is definitely braver than me regarding proximity to alligators–I got close enough to snap a photo and then backed right up!

To-Do #2

I had plenty of time of airplanes as well as some relaxing time at Annette’s, and I got two Sashiko squares finished during my trip. The pic below is definitely not great, but it shows the two squares next to a portion of Annette’s lovely swimming pool where we spent one relaxing afternoon floating around.

To-Do #3

I just made three more Murmuration diamonds this past week before going to Florida, but I didn’t take a photo of them.

To-Do for the week of June 20th-26th:

  1. Write my June 2022 OMG Finish post.
  2. Make more Murmuration units (diamonds and possibly triangles).
  3. Get caught up with my temperature quilts flying geese.

Weekly Progress Update #148

To-Do for the week of June 6th-12th:

  1. Bind Colby’s high school graduation camping quilt. √Done
  2. Make more Murmuration diamonds. √Done
  3. Work on a Sashiko square using my favorite variegated Caribbean perle floss on grey cloth. √Done

To-Do #1

I did get Colby’s camping high school graduation quilt finished over the weekend. Camping has been a big part of his life, so I opted to make another camping quilt to commemorate the occasion and to celebrate our family’s love of camping. I used the Apex quilt pattern by Mitzie@Jittery Wings. The pattern uses strip piecing to simplify the piecing. I wasn’t able to strip piece all of my fabrics due to choosing to fussy cut the big camper/tent squares and the small phases-of-the-moon squares, but I can tell you that the pattern is well written, and I can see me making it again and totally strip piecing my next version of it. Below is a pic of the front of the quilt and the second photo below shows the back of the quilt.

To-Do #2

In the bin in the pic below are 48 Murmuration diamonds. I have nine more on my design wall, so I have a total of 57 of the 93 diamonds I need to be make for this quilt. I’ll also need to make 30 triangles, so this project will keep me busy for awhile.

IMG_1283[1868]

To-Do #3

Over the weekend I also finished one Sashiko square with the pretty variegated Caribbean perle floss. I’m thinking I will make another set of coasters similar to the ones shown in this post, but I may substitute a different pattern or two.

Weekly Progress Update #147

To-Do for the week of May 30th-June 5th:

  1. Write my June 2022 One Monthly Goal post. √Done
  2. Make some more units for my June goal. √Done
  3. If I get Colby’s quilt back from Melissa@Sew Shabby Quilting by the weekend, I plan to get it finished. Nope

To-Do #1

For those of you who have followed by blog for awhile, you may remember reading about a quilt at the top of quilty bucket list. It is the Murmuration quilt by Rebecca@Bryan House Quilts. Below are my first nine Murmuration diamonds. Read more about this project here.

IMG_1263[1850]

To-Do #2

I’ve been house/cat sitting for my friends, Sue and John, and of course, I brought a sewing machine over to work on some Murmuration units. Their cat, BG (short for Birthday Girl) decided that I needed some help. I literally had to pull out some ziplock bags from underneath her when I needed a specific color 🙂

IMG_1270[1852]

Below is a pic of three different units. The middle diamond is not trimmed yet. This project is an interesting combination of improv and foundation paper piecing. It’s been fun alternating the widths of strips as well as color arrangement.

IMG_1271[1854]

To-Do #3

I did not receive the quilt back from Sew Shabby Quilting in time for me to bind it this past weekend. The good news is the quilt arrived on Monday, so I will be able to bind it this coming weekend.

To-Do for the week of June 6th-12th:

  1. Make more Murmuration diamonds.
  2. Bind Colby’s high school graduation camping quilt.
  3. Work on a Sashiko square using my favorite variegated Caribbean perle floss on grey cloth.

June 2022 OMG

My June 2022 One Monthly Goal is to make 50 more diamonds for a quilt I’ve wanted to make for awhile using the Murmuration pattern by Rebecca@Bryan House Quilts. Below are the first nine diamonds I made over the Memorial Day weekend which will be arranged differently when I finish making all 93 diamonds plus 24 triangles in the final layout.

IMG_1263[1850]

I will be using 20 different Kona solids in the teal/turquoise/aqua colorway which is an absolute favorite color scheme–only slightly second to rainbow/ombré projects!

  1. Share my May 2022 One Monthly Goal Finished post. √Done
  2. Write a post about my finished Treasure Hunt quilt and share next Sunday on the Hands2Help Final linky party on Mari@Academic Quilter’s site. √Done
  3. Work on a Kantha pillow cover. √Done
  4. I added a fourth to-do. Since publishing this post last Monday, I found out that my Color Gradient Strip Quilt had been quilted and was on its way back to me! So I plan to get it finished this upcoming holiday weekend. √Done

To-Do #1

I’m happy to share that my finished Nene quilt has been received by Rebecca@Rebecca Grace Quilting. It’s on her quilting calendar for June 20th. More info about my finished May One Monthly Goal can be read here.

IMG_1243[1777]

To-Do #2

On Sunday I shared a post about my Treasure Hunt quilt on Hands2Help Final Link party. Check it out here if you’re interested.

IMG_1212[1843]

To-Do #3

I did get the front of my Kantha pillow cover sewn together and did some Kantha stitching on two middle strips. I really like how this stitching looks, and I’m not sure it needs any more decorative stitching, so I’m going to focus on some other projects and put this project on the back burner for now.

IMG_1262[1848]

To-Do #4

I did get my Color Gradient Strip quilt back and quickly got it bound and photographed outside in the very welcome blue sky. More details are included in this post.

To-Do for the week of May 30th-June 5th:

  1. Write my June 2022 One Monthly Goal post.
  2. Make some more units for my June goal.
  3. If I get Colby’s quilt back from Melissa@Sew Shabby Quilting by the weekend, I plan to get it finished.

Treasure Hunt Quilt Finished

At the beginning of 2022, I decided to pull out an old Work-in-Progress to make a 60″ x 60″ quilt for a donation quilt for the 2022 Hands2Help Comfort Quilt Challenge. I was a part of Alyce@ Blossom Heart Quilts‘ Bee Hive for three years and in 2019, I had Bee Hive members make scrappy Treasure Hunt block units that I used in this quilt (read the details about these blocks here).

IMG_1212[1843]

I sent it to Amy@Amy’s Creative Side to quilt one of my favorite quilting designs–diagonal plaid, and I really like how this quilting complements the piecing.

Originally I was going to donate the quilt to one of the charities listed on the Hands 2 Help Kickoff post on Mari@The Academic Quilter’s blog. But this spring we’ve had some terrible wildfires in northern New Mexico, and one of my former graduate program professors lost everything in one of the fires, so I decided to donate this quilt to her. I gave it to Linda a couple weeks ago, and she was very grateful for it.

Color Gradient Strip Quilt Finished

If you spend much time on Instagram, you may have seen all sorts of gorgeous strip quilt tops and even some patchwork squares and improv layouts. Alison Glass has been hosting a Kantha sew-along where participants simply piece colorful quilt tops and then embellish them with simple Kantha running stitches. I really wanted to make a Kantha quilt, but what I realized when I finished sewing my color gradient strip quilt top is that I wanted it to be quilted fairly quickly and NOT by me! I have started a Kantha pillow cover that is about one-ninth of the size of my quilt top, which is much more doable for me. I’ll be sharing my progress about my Kantha pillow next week. But today I am happy to share my Color Gradient Strip Quilt finish that is made mostly with Alison Glass fabrics with a few favorite Giucy Giuce fabrics thrown in. The quilt measures 54″ by 78″.

IMG_1257[1831]

I sent it to Cara@Sew Colorado Quilting to quilt a modern waves design, and she did a lovely job and got it back to me within a very decent timeline.

Right now it is folded on my recliner in the living room, but it might have to spend some time on my bed in the near future, so I can enjoy all the colors.

May 2022 OMG Finished

My May 2022 One Monthly Goal was to make a beautiful and colorful quilt top using the Nene pattern by Eye Candy Quilts and Giucy Giuce’s gorgeous Quantum panels (second and third pics below).

IMG_1243[1777]

IMG_1194[1641]

IMG_1193[1643]

I first saw these amazing panels in the Nene quilt made by Eye Candy Quilts on Jessie@Threaded Quilting Studio’s blog post Hiring a Longarm Quilter: Footnotes Edition. If you open the link, scroll down to the fifth photo to see this spectacular version. I have used coordinating Kona solids for the stained glass strips (Mediterranean, Celestial, Oasis,Glacier, Ultra Marine, Prussian, Grass and an unknown darker green–because when I first started quilting, I didn’t label my solid fabrics, Grellow, Papaya, Cedar, Cerise, and Berry) and Kona Charcoal to outline the triangles. My background fabric is Kona Titanium. This has been a project I’ve wanted to make for over three years, so I’m excited that I’ve finally made the quilt top. The blocks measure 11 3/4″ x 22 5/8″–not the most straightforward block dimension!

I have sent the quilt top and backing off to Rebecca@Rebecca Grace Quilting. I’m on her long-arm quilting calendar for the week of June 20th. We’ve decided on a quilting design and have discussed possible thread choices that will be finalized once Rebecca receives the quilt. I can’t wait to see this project quilted!
