To-Do #1

On Saturday I took a few photos of my Lumen quilt hanging outside on the curtain rod attached to our shed. Here’s the pic of front which benefited from the sun just starting to rise above the horizon. I love how vibrant the Alison Glass Kaleidoscope colors look on the charcoal background.

Lumen front full shot

The wide backing fabric for the back of Lumen is Aurora Borealis from Backside Fabrics. I snapped the pic of the back about 10 minutes later than the front when the sun was starting to shine.

And here’s a close-up of the back of Lumen:

I’m so pleased with my finished Lumen quilt which measures 60″ square. As a reminder, Lumen was quilted by Rebecca@Rebecca Grace Quilting. The quilting design is called Celestial Spark Clam, and the variegated thread is Great Barrier Reef. For more close-ups of Lumen, please see my weekly post from last week here which really shows off the pretty variegated thread. And some of you may remember that I made another version of Lumen in 2019 for my stepdaughter, and even back then, I knew it was likely I’d make my own Lumen quilt to keep. If you are interested in reading about my first Lumen quilt, please see this post.

To-Do #2

Below are the flying geese units for my three temperature quilts for July-September sewn into columns which were sewn together to complete the third quarter for each state. Read my Oct 2022 One Monthly Goal Finish post for more information about this project. New Mexico is the left, California in the middle, and Washington on the right:

To-Do #3

I made some progress doing some stitching on my Sashiko Daisy Pouch, but I’ll wait to take another photo until I finish the stitching.

To-Do for the week of Nov 1st-7th:

  1. Share my Nov 2022 One Monthly Goal post.
  2. Do a little more stitching on my Sashiko Daisy pouch project.
  3. Start working on some Sew Tiny Christmas ornaments.

October 2022 OMG Finished

My October 2022 One Monthly Goal was to sew together the third quarter (July, August, and September 2022) of the THREE temperature quilts I am making this year. The first temp quilt is for me in northern New Mexico, the second for my stepdaughter who lives in California in the Bay Area, and the third for my stepson who lives in Washington. I’m using 2″x4″ finished flying geese in all three quilts. I am paper-piecing all the flying geese using Lee@Freshly Pieced’ Perfect Flying Geese and keeping track of the date, state, and colors on the paper to help keep me organized. I am using the same Kona solids to depict each temperature range, and it has been fun to see the units sewn together for each quarter so far in 2022 and compare the different temperatures for each state. Below are the flying geese units for July-September. New Mexico is the left, California in the middle, and Washington on the right:

Weekly Progress Update #167

To-Do for the week of Oct 18th-24th:

  1. Take photos of my Lumen quilt. √Done
  2. Sew flying geese units into columns for September for NM, CA, and WA. √Done
  3. Do a little more stitching on my Sashiko Daisy pouch project. √Done

To-Do #1

The weather did not allow me to get outside to take any pics of my finished Lumen quilt, so I took a few inside on my bed. I love how Rebecca’s quilting complements the minimal piecing. The quilting design we chose is called Celestial Spark Clam, and the variegated thread is Great Barrier Reef.

And here’s one more lovely shot taken by Rebecca before she sent Lumen back to me:

To-Do #2

Here are the flying geese sewn together for September for New Mexico, California, and Washington. Notice that my step-daughter in a Bay Area city in California experienced the highest temperature in September as represented by Kona Coral. In the photo below I forgot to sew Kona Charcoal rectangles at the end of the columns since September does not have 31 days.

To-Do #3

I am two-thirds done with the sashiko stitching on my Daisy drawstring pouch from BeBe Bold. In the photo below, I have completed one set of the diagonal lines of stitching, and I’m really liking how it is looking:

Weekly Progress Update #166

To-Do for the week of Oct 11th-17th:

  1. Bind my Lumen quilt that I received back from Rebecca last week. √Done
  2. Sew flying geese units into columns for August for NM, CA, and WA. √Done
  3. Do a little more Sashiko stitching in a different color palette than grey/turquoise. √Done

To-Do #1

I did get my Lumen quilt bound this past week but did not have time to take any photos. That’s on my list for next week.

To-Do #2

Here are the flying geese sewn together for August for New Mexico, California, and Washington. It’s interesting to see that my stepson in a city in the state of Washington experienced four days of 90 or above as represented by Kona Torch, and neither my city in New Mexico nor my step daughter’s city in the Bay Area city in California had any days in the 90s.

August flying geese columns

To-Do #3

I have started another Sashiko project from BeBe Bold. It’s their Daisy drawstring pouch, and the color palette is wonderfully rich (and definitely not my typical brightly colored palettes!). In the photo below, I have completed the straight lines of stitching:

To-Do for the week of Oct 18th-Oct 24th:

  1. Take photos of my Lumen quilt.
  2. Sew flying geese units into columns for September for NM, CA, and WA.
  3. Do a little more stitching on my Sashiko Daisy pouch project.

Weekly Progress Update #165

To-Do for the week of Oct 4th-10th:

  1. Bind my Offset Gradients quilt. √Done
  2. Sew flying geese units into columns for July for NM, CA, and WA. √Done
  3. Do a little more Sashiko stitching. √Done

To-Do #1

I did get my Offset Gradients quilt bound this past week. As a reminder, I used Alison Glass’ Spectrum pattern, and this was a quick project to make, and GASP, it was not paper-pieced! The quilt measures 54″ X 78″, and I only used Alison Glass and Giucy Giuce fabrics in the quilt. I’ve accumulated quite a stash of their fabrics over the years, and it’s nice to finally be using them. (I dipped my toe in the water when I made my Color Gradient Strip Quilt quilt a few months ago, but I made a serious dent in their fabrics when I cut 7 inches width of fabric for the triangles for this project). I read a newsletter over the weekend from Yvonne at Quilting Jetgirl where she introduced me to a new acronym: FOUF–Fear of Using Fabric. I have definitely suffered from FOUF over the years, but it absolutely brings me to joy to be creating projects with these beautiful fabrics, so my FOUF has significantly decreased!

Here’s one close-up of the beautiful quilting done by Rebecca at Rebecca Grace Quilting that looks as lovely on the Kaleidoscope Charcoal sashing which I also used for binding as it does on the prints:

And here’s another close-up that shows off the Sunrise Chevron quilting pattern:Offset Gradients close up 1

I really love the photo Rebecca took before she returned the quilt to me (note to self–try more photos from different angles):

Here’s a a full shot of the back of the quilt that shows the wide back Stonehedge Gradations Ombre in Graphite from Backside Fabrics.

Weekly Progress Update #164

To-Do for the week of  Sept 27th-Oct 3rd:

  1. Bind my Break of Day quilt. √Done
  2. Write my Oct 2022 One Monthly Goal post. √Done
  3. Do a little more Sashiko stitching. √Done

To-Do #1

I did finish binding Break of Day over the weekend using Kona Hibiscus which is the same dark purple as the dark purple stars in the center of the quilt. The quilt measures 58″ X 68″. I chose to have Melissa from Sew Shabby Quilting quilt large spirals to give it a softer, more ethereal look. I’m very happy with the finished quilt (see many more details about this quilt here). Another quilt crossed off my Quilty Bucket list!

October 2022 OMG

My October 2022 One Monthly Goal is to sew together the third quarter (July, August, and September 2022) of the THREE temperature quilts I am making this year. I’ve wanted to make a temperature quilt for the past couple years but then the pandemic hit, and I didn’t particularly want to commemorate 2020 or 2021, but I’ve been somewhat cautiously trying to live a more normal life in 2022. The first temp quilt is for me in northern New Mexico, the second for my stepdaughter who lives in California in the Bay Area, and the third for my stepson who lives in Washington. I am using the same Kona solids to depict each temperature range, and when they are finished, it will be so much fun to see the quilts next to each other and compare the different temperatures for each state. Below are the flying geese units for Jan-March. New Mexico is the left, California in the middle, and Washington on the right:

IMG_1098[1624]

I’m using 2″x4″ finished flying geese in all three quilts. I am paper-piecing all the flying geese using Lee@Freshly Pieced’ Perfect Flying Geese and keeping track of the date, state, and colors on the paper to help keep me organized. Here are the units for April-June for NM, CA, and WA.

I’m looking forward to seeing what the third quarter of this year looks like once I’ve sewn them together.

Weekly Progress Update #163

To-Do for the week of Sept 20th-Sept 26th:

  1. Finish my niece’s Herringbone place mats and write my Sept ’22 OMG Finish post. √Done
  2. Refine my fabric pull for my mini rainbow block. √Done
  3. Do a little more Sashiko stitching. √Done

To-Do #1

I did finish my niece’s place mats. Below is a pic with some pretty late-season cosmos flowers after I washed and air-dried the place mats. They did not shrink too much. They were 12.5″ x 18.5″ prior to being laundered and lost about 1/4″ with both width and length.

And another shot where I tried to be a little artsy with some strewn cosmos 🙂

In my September 2022 One Monthly Goal Finish post, I shared several pre-wash photos that I took on our robin blue stained picnic table. Here is one pic from that post that shows the two different fabrics from Sharon Holland’s Willow Collection that I used for the backs.

To-Do #2

Here are the fabrics I’ve decided to use for my Mini Series Rainbow. I hope to start working on it in the next couple weeks.

September 2022 OMG Finish

My September 2022 One Monthly Goal was to make a set of eight herringbone/chevron place mats as a house-warming gift for my niece, Mary Frances, who bought a lovely vintage home a few months ago. For the pattern I used two of the foundation paper pieced templates from Alison Glass’ Feathers 2021 Pattern Book.

MF Placemats 1

I used four fabrics from the Chasing Wildflowers Collection by Juniper Row Design for Hawthorne Supply Co. and a recent Giucy Giuce print called Matrix in Mulberry from his From Attic Collection (with the pink pliers on top of it). All the other fabrics were from my stash, though I did need to buy some more Smoke and Rust fabric by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics for binding from Kimmie Anne Fabrics on Etsy. I especially love the Aboriginal print placed in the upper left side of the bin. It looks like a snake in the pic above in the first vertical place mat on left side.

Fabric pull for Mary Frances placemats

For the back of the place mats, I used two lovely fabrics from Sharon Holland’s Willow Collection: Owl Things Floral in Forest and Flora and Fauna in Treasured.

MF Placemats 5

MF Placemats 6

I quilted the place mats with diagonal lines spaced 3/4″ apart which can replicate the chevron design depending on how my niece places them on her table. The thread is Aurafil 50 wt Medium Orange (5009).

To-Do #3

While I didn’t take any photos of the flying geese units I’ve been making on a daily basis, I did contact Rebecca@Rebecca Grace Quilting and made arrangements for her to do the quilting of my three temperature quilts early next year.
