Weekly Progress Update #155

To-Do for the week of July 25th-31st:

  1. Work on another color gradient quilt. √Done
  2. Make a few units for Lumen 2.0. √Done
  3. Watch Sarah Goer‘s Sewing Smooth Improv Curve class through Global Quilt Connection Sampler. √Done

To-Do #1

If you have been following my blog for awhile, you know that I LOVE color gradient quilts. I probably have at least 10 more color gradient quilts on my Quilty Bucket list. Back in 2018 Erica with Kitchen Table Quilting shared a blog post about her Break of Day Quilt using her Katie Quilt pattern. I immediately pinned her blog post, and occasionally it has shown up in my Pinterest feed. When it popped up again a couple months ago, I decided to take a look at how many of the Kona solid fabrics she used in this quilt I had in my stash (BTW she offers the list for free in her shop), and I had many of them. I struggled with whether I could fit this quilt in this year but then I decided to shift a couple projects to 2023. Below is a pic of some of the flying geese I’ve made along with fabric for the nine patch plus blocks for this project. I’m waiting on one more fabric to complete the sunrise look which is Kona Lupine–a very pretty light purple fabric.

To-Do #2

Speaking of color gradient quilts, I have just barely started making units for Lumen 2.0. I first made this quilt in 2019 for my stepdaughter, and I have honestly thought about making a Lumen quilt for myself ever since I finished making the first one. I’ve only made two units so far with Kaleidoscope Charcoal and Foxglove. I’m waiting to make any more unit until I finish my Break of Day quilt top.

To-Do #3

I really enjoyed watching Sarah Goer‘s Sewing Smooth Improv Curve class through Global Quilt Connection Sampler over the weekend, and I played a little with overlapped curves after watching her class. Take a look at her awesome overlapped rainbow curves on Instagram here. Below is my practice piece with some leftover Murmuration fabric.

Overlapped curves

To-Do for the week of August 1st-7th:

  1. Make progress on Break of Day.
  2. Pull some fabric for a set of placemats for my niece, Mary Frances.
  3. Take a Quilt as You Go class on August 5th.

July 2022 OMG Finish

My July 2022 One Monthly Goal was to finish making my Murmuration quilt top (making units for this quilt was also my June 2022 OMG). This is a project I’ve wanted to make for around three years using the improv/paper-pieced Murmuration pattern by Rebecca@Bryan House Quilts. I  used 21 different Kona solids (Prussian, Celestial, Everglade, Glacier, Emerald, Ultra Marine, Caribbean, Pacific, Oasis, Cyan, Turquoise, Lagoon, Jade Green, Breakers, Pool, Capri, Azure, Aloha, Aqua, and Sea Glass). The quilt top measures 62″ X 72″. Below is a pic of the finished flimsy.

Later today I’ll be sending it off for quilting to Rebecca@Rebecca Grace Quilting.

Weekly Progress Update #152

To-Do for the week of July 4th-10th:

  1. Bind my Nene quilt and a write a post about it when it’s finished. √Done
  2. Start sewing my April flying geese temperature units into columns. √Done
  3. Work on my Murmuration project. √Done

To-Do #1

I did get my Nene quilt finished. Read the details here.

To-Do #2

I was able to get all my flying geese units sewn into columns for April, May, and June. From left to right is the second quarter of 2022 for my city in New Mexico, my stepdaughter’s Bay Area city in California, and my stepson’s city in Washington. It’s obvious that my city has the greatest temperature fluctuations from the below freezing purples to the high of 94 depicted by Kona Coral. The pic below shows most of the flying geese, but I wasn’t patient enough to wait for the wind to die down more to get a less wind-blown shot 🙂

temp columns april through june

To-Do #3

I have made more progress on my Murmuration project but there’s nothing photo-worthy of any of the units I’ve made. But in the next week I plan to get all the units made for the right side of the quilt, and I will share a photo in my next Weekly Progress Update post.

To-Do for the week of July 11th-17th:

  1. Finish units for the right side of my Murmuration project.
  2. Make more July flying geese units for my temp quilts.

Nene Quilt Finished

I am beyond thrilled to share that I have finished my Nene quilt. I’ve had the gorgeous Quantum panels by Giucy Giuce in my stash for a couple years (and I have enough left for a whole different quilt someday!), and I love how the panels look cut first into triangles and then accented with colorful film strip borders. This 67”  X 79” quilt was long-arm quilted by Rebecca@Rebecca Grace Quilting. She used Starlight quilting design with a pretty green thread (So Fine in Ferrari). The binding fabric is Kona Celestial. For more information about this project, please see this post. Here is a full shot of the finished quilt:

And here is a close-up of the wonderful quilting:

IMG_1339[1904]

I made the quilt for a bed in the back room, but my best friend, Mary, thinks it will look really good on her bed. Hmmmmmmmm. I might consider it a loaner!

IMG_1329[1902]

To-Do #2

I’ve made several more Murmuration units this past week, some of which are in the photo above. I think I will spare everyone more photos of this project until the quilt top is finished. I do think they’re very pretty, but they definitely look alike!

To-Do #3

I enjoyed recapping the first half of 2022 and prioritizing what I want to accomplish in the second half of this year in my 2022 Mid-Year Check-in post. The photo below shows flying geese depicting January, February, and March temperatures for my city in New Mexico, my stepdaughter’s city in the Bay Area in California, and my stepson’s city in Washington. Staying current with these temperature quilts is my number one priority the rest of 2022.

2022 Mid Year Checkin

I am joining in on Yvonne@Quilting Jetgirl’s#2022 Mid Year Check-in Linky Party. I’ve participated in these Planning Parties hosted by Yvonne for the past six years. (See my 2021, 2020, 2020 Mid Year Review2019, 2018, 2017, and 2016 posts for previous quilting-related goals). I really enjoy the opportunity to reflect on what I’ve accomplished and be more intentional about what I want to prioritize in the coming half-year or year.

Here is what I had hoped to accomplish in 2022:

Temperature Quilts

I’ve been keeping up with making 2″x 4″ flying geese for THREE temperature quilts that uses data from AccuWeather for cities in three different states. I am using the same Kona solids to depict each temperature range, and it has been so much fun to see the columns of flying geese next to each other and compare the different temperatures for each state. Below is a pic of Jan-March units sewn together with my town in New Mexico (NM) on the left, my stepdaughter’s Bay Area city in California (CA) in the middle, and my stepson’s city in Washington (WA) on the right. The purple colors are the colder temps, and the greens and yellow are the warmer temps.

Quilt Your Life

In January I joined Kitty@NightQuilter’s Quilt Your Life Crew and had planned to document distance on my Peloton bike. I’ve been riding it at least 10 minutes a day (which for me has been a little over 3K) for the past eight months (except for one day when I was sick with food poisoning–Ugh!). I originally planned to make large throw-size Quilt Your Life quilt, but have decided to make a mini quilt with the block below embellished with some embroidered stats for the year.

IMG_0995[1575]

Quilts for Special Occasions

  • a high school graduation quilt for my great-nephew, Colby
  • an I Spy quilt to celebrate Lucy’s first birthday in April
  • a Pineapple mini quilt for my sister-in-law, Sharon’s 70th birthday also in April
  • Butterfly Effect English Paper Piecing quilt for my best friend, Mary’s birthday in October using a quilt kit I bought in April from Pink Door Fabrics.

I got the first two on my list of Quilts for Special Occasions completed. I finished Colby’s high school graduation camping quilt in June, link to post here. I really enjoyed making Lucy’s I Spy quilt, link to post here. I started to work on a Pineapple mini quilt for Sharon’s 70th birthday but had some difficulty with it and had lots of other things going on in my life, so I opted for a store-bought gift. Gasp! I also decided to postpone making the Butterfly EPP mini quilt for my best friend. Lord knows she’s NOT hurting for handmade items from me!

Donation Quilt

I decided to turn an old Work-in-Progress from 2019 into a donation quilt in 2022. It is the Treasure Hunt quilt, and I had Bee Hive members make scrappy blocks that for this quilt. I ended up donating this quilt to a professor of mine from grad school who lost everything in a wildfire in May. Read more about this quilt here.

Quilts that Weren’t on my list for 2022

Round Robin Quilts

In January I decided to participate in the Stay at Home Round Robin (SAHRR) 2022 organized by Quilting Gail. I enjoyed it so much that I made my another round robin quilt using most of the same borders for a quilt for my stepson featuring his Boston Terrier, Sushi. See this post for photos of these finished quilts.

Color Gradient Quilts

Not surprisingly, I decided to work on three color gradient quilts this year. One is a finished quilt, one I just received back from Rebecca Grace earlier this week, and one is my current project. The finished quilt is my Color Gradient Strip quilt, link to post here. Nene is the quilt that was quilted by Rebecca, link to finished quilt top here, and my current project is my Murmuration quilt, link to post here.

What’s Up for the Rest of the Year?

My priorities are obviously finishing up my Nene and Murmuration quilts in the next two-three months, and making headway on my temperature quilts and Quilt Your Life mini quilt, but of course I have some other projects that interest me that I may or may not get to.

  1. I’m thinking of making one more throw-size quilt this year. Lumen is definitely a favorite of all the quilts I’ve made, and I frequently think about making this quilt for myself. Read about the Lumen quilt I made for my stepdaughter here.
  2. More small projects including mini quilts, table runners, placemats, and pillows.
  3. Make some blocks for a Mosaic Story Camping Quilt using Amy Friend’s Mosaic Story quilt block.
  4. Make some Sew Tiny ornaments. See two adorable trees in this post.
  5. Make a center block for the 2023 Stay At Home Round Robin.

July 2022 OMG

My July 2022 One Monthly Goal is to finish making my Murmuration quilt top (making units for this quilt was also my June 2022 OMG). This is a project I’ve wanted to make for around three years using the Murmuration pattern by Rebecca@Bryan House Quilts. So far I’ve used 21 different Kona solids. Below is a pic of 63 diamonds and five of the triangles I’ve made so far for this project that is getting closer to the final layout which be comprised of 93 diamonds plus 30 triangles. I’ve also made a few lighter diamonds that aren’t in the photo that will be placed near the outer perimeter of the quilt. I’m definitely having fun finally working on this quilt and seeing it start to come together!

Weekly Progress Update #150

To-Do for the week of June 20th-26th:

  1. Write my June 2022 OMG Finish post. √Done
  2. Make more Murmuration units (diamonds and possibly triangles). √Done
  3. Get caught up with my temperature quilts flying geese. √Done

To-Do #1

After I returned from my trip to Florida, I put the 60 diamonds I’ve completed thus far on my design board in nowhere near the final layout, took a photo, and wrote this post.

IMG_1316[1895]

To-Do #2

Over the weekend, I decided to make five of the 18 triangles needed for the top and bottom of the Murmuration quilt top.

IMG_1319[1900]

To-Do #3

I had 18 flying geese to make on Thursday morning after getting back from my trip. Since then I’ve gotten back to making the three flying geese daily. In the photo below, the flying geese are arranged with New Mexico on the left, a Bay Area city in California in the middle, and a city in the state of Washington on the right. The dates shown from top to bottom are June 17th-June 25th. Surprisingly enough, the Bay Area city had the highest temperature in this nine day span (92 degrees shown as Torch) between the three cities.
